腫瘍のリンパ節転移には、腫瘍周囲にリンパ管が形成され、腫瘍細胞がリンパ管に浸潤することが必要である。移植マウス乳癌を用いて検討した結果、高転移性の乳癌細胞はリンパ管内皮増殖因子を分泌しリンパ管が多数形成されることが転移の要因となっている。また、ヒアルロン酸レセプター(CD44)を発現しているため、運動性が増し、腫瘍組織からヒアルロン酸がリンパ管に吸収されるに伴い、リンパ管に浸潤することがわかった。
