カンキツ果実に病気を引き起こす白かび病菌(Geotrichum candidum)には、病気を起こさない非病原性株が存在する。この病原性の違いに、植物細胞壁分解酵素の1種であるポリガラクツロナーゼ(PG)のプロトペクチナーゼ活性(自然界で植物組織内に存在している不溶性ペクチンを分解する活性)が関わっていることを明らかにした。これまで、PGが病原性に関わっているかどうか不明な点が多く、論争が起きていたが、それを解決する大きな糸口となった。
