「東アジア・アセアン経済研究センター（ERIA）」において9か月間従事し、経済における国家間関係をより多角的に評価し、比較的に考察することができた。１）AFTA成立に続き、ASEAN＋１（ASEAN全体と対話国と）のFTAという形で、ASEAN域内のみならず、対話国との経済関係が数多く成立した。こうした動きは、二国間関係が、地域全体を包含する形での結びつきに先行する形で表れているという地域主義の1つの特徴であるということができると同時に、「ASEAN側にとっても、また域外国側にとっても、単に経済的便益の確保以上の政治的な含意を持つ」ものであると指摘されている。各FTA締結過程の分析から、周辺強国のパワーバランスの変化に、緩やかに結びついた中小国連合（Association）であるASEANが緩衝地として、地政学上も、国際交渉においても機能したことが指摘できる。こうした動きは1920年代の国際関係とは対比的に捉えられよう。英国から米国への権力移行が起きる中で、米英関係が協調的に保たれる間（英国の再建金本位制の成立に際しての金利政策の協調）は安定していたものの、そのバランスが崩れる中、残りの欧州諸国が緩衝として機能し得なかったということが指摘できうるだろう。２）東アジアの国際関係は、多国間制度が複数重なりあい、「ASEANの中心性」の下に成り立つ中で、成立時からの制度の役割と機能の変容が指摘できる。東アジアサミット（EAS）は、RCEP（地域包括的経済連携）のスキームと同じ、ASEAN＋6で成立していたが、米国とロシアの加盟等を契機として、従来の経済を扱う場から、安全保障を主とする会議に変容したと、サミットの議長声明、及び関連会合の声明文の分析から明らかにできた。また、EASの機能変化がAPECやG20の機能に対しても影響を与え、変化を及ぼしていることが同じく指摘できた。
