本研究の目的は、日本の二大都市圏を対象として、戦後における世帯構成の地理的な変化を分析し、そのメカニズムを明らかにすることである。目的を達成するために、本研究背は、A核家族世帯の地理的変化に関する分析とB単身世帯の地理的変化に関する分析の2つの作業課題を設定しており、初年度である平成24年度には、作業課題A・Bを進めるにあたって必要となる資料の収集およびデータの整備と、これらのデータの基礎的な分析を行った。作業課題Aに関しては、『全国学校総覧』に記載された小学校の児童数等に関するデータの整備を進め、1970年代以降の京阪神大都市圏に関するデータを作成した。小学校児童数の分布とその変化は、郊外化による核家族世帯の拡大過程を示すものであり、1970年代以降の小学校児童数データからは、既成市街地での人口変動やニュータウン開発、郊外へのスプロール的な開発の状況、少子化やニュータウン地域での高齢化などの現象を読み取ることができる。今後、大都市圏レベルの小地域統計が作成されていない、1960年代以前のデータの整備も完了すれば、戦後の郊外化の過程を詳細に明らかにすることができるようになろう。一方、作業課題Bに関しては、東京23区に関する小地域統計資料の収集とデジタル化作業を進めた。東京都が独自に作成した小地域統計資料には、1960年代後半以降の世帯構成の地理的な変化を詳細に描き出すことのできる情報が含まれている。これらのデータから読み取ることのできる居住地域構造や世帯構成の地理的な変化について、2012年人文地理学会大会や日本地理学会2013年春季学術大会において発表した。また、同じく東京都が独自に作成した国籍別の外国人に関する詳細な国勢調査結果を利用し、近年の居住地域構造との関係から外国人居住地の分布について分析した結果を『人文地理』に投稿し、掲載された。
