本研究の目的は、高まる世界経済競争と世界の都市部での社会格差の中、いかに政治家、プランナー、デベロッパー、市民に共通する「都市の公共空間」を明らかにすることである。しかし公共空間における過去のネオリベラルな規制緩和や民営化政策の結果、相互依存における発展の影響について適切な理解が深められることなく政府、地方自治体などの行政側から民間セクターへと移行することとなった。本研究では、公共性の高い都市空間の協力的(官民)計画方法、実際の建設、管理という全プロセスの流れを系統的に調査、分析する。研究の中では、現制度や社会的状況における「公開空地(privately owned public space、POPS)」(※「公開空地」は公共性の高い民間所有地)のあり方を特に詳しく精査する。それに加え、より新しい実例として着目しているのは特定地域における公共空間の民間による創出や管理が争いに繋がるケースである。下北沢の道路開発プロジェクトや銀座松坂屋の再開発プロジェクト、渋谷宮下公園の民間化と京都梅小路公園の中の民間デベロッパーで水族館工事といったものが挙げられる。都市化や都市構造の再編が進む中、民間化の拡大は日本に限った問題ではない。都市空間の問題はアメリカ・ニューヨーク、チリ・サンティアゴ、オーストラリア・メルボルン、ドイツ各都市でも見られるため、それらの都市と日本の都市との関連性も共同研究中である。共同研究結果の議論のため、2010年5月27日、28日、29日にはオーストラリア・メルボルンでアーヘン工科大学のペゲレース博士とメルボルン工科大学のヨナス教授主催のワークショップに参加して次の共同のワークショップは12月にドイツのアーヘン市で予定されている。また2010年7月10日上智大学の比較文化研究所主催の『Alternative Politics : Youth, Media, Performance and Activism in Urban Japan日本人若者政治参加と都市空間』と言うコンファレンスで東京における「奪い合われる空間」に関して発表し、複合的観点から見る現代都市日本の公共空間の社会文化特有性について議論した。また同じテーマに関して11月にドイツ、フランクフルト市でのVSJF学会と2011年の3月にホノルル市でのAASの学会発表する予定である。
