今年度はこれまでの研究の体系化に取り組むとともに、1980・90年代以降のカナダおよびオーストラリアでの「多文化主義的」と形容できる歴史観の成立、それに対する修正主義的批判、これらの相互関係のなかで生じる旧来のナショナリズムの相克を検証した。オーストラリアについては、昨年度からの「日本学術振興会優秀若手研究者海外派遣事業」によるシドニー大学での在外研究を7月末まで継続し、カナダについては、10月から11月にかけての10日間、オタワの国立図書・公文書館で史料調査を行った。これらの調査では、オーストラリアのフェミニストによるナショナリズムと家父長制、白豪主義(とくに先住民に対する抑圧)の共犯関係の指摘などが明らかになると同時に、近年のカナダおよびオーストラリアに共通して、先住民を含むマイノリティの人々がむしろ、二つの世界大戦における戦争貢献を発掘することで、ナショナリズムの空間へ積極的に参画しようとする動きが確認できた。そこでは、戦争の記憶を媒介として、多文化社会の人々が「国民」として統合され、多様な出自の象徴的な「和解」が演出される反面で、植民地化の功罪への評価が背景に退けられるなど、多文化主義下の国民統合を取り巻く緊張関係が示されている。成果発表については、別府大学で5月に開催された日本西洋史学会で、カナダにおける文化面での脱植民地化について口頭発表を行った他、本研究課題全体を通した知見が、オーストラリアの政府機関である豪日交流基金のSir Neil Currie Publication Awardを受賞し、同団体の出版助成による研究書としての刊行が決定した。また、シドニーでの在外研究後には、オーストラリア学会の第11回地域研究会(関西例会)として、現地で知己を得たオーストラリア外交史の権威ネヴィル・メイニー教授を招いたセミナーを組織し、その概要を別表のフォーラムとして出版した。
