Subject-oriented adverbs and the structure of verb phrases

This research has studied mental-attitude adverbs (such as reluctantly, willingly, and calmly) in English and proposed a new analysis of the relation between their positions in sentences and their interpretations, focusing on examples which are not dealt with in previous studies (the case in which they describe an attitude of the referent of the object noun). Furthermore, as a preliminary study of differences between English and Japanese found in constructions involving those adverbs and adjectives, the present research has addressed the question of how adjectives and adverbs function as predicates in Japanese.
