项目摘要

本年度は古英語で用いられた副詞的格の機能とその前置詞句との競合関係を特定性という観点から考察した。特定性とは文脈中である名詞が特定の対象を指しているということを表す概念であり、現代英語の副詞的名詞を扱う先行研究において副詞的名詞の容認性と関係していることがしばしば指摘されている。古英語の副詞的格の使用にも特定性が関係しているのかを調査するため、Dictionary of Old English Corpusより時間名詞の用例を韻文・散文の両方から収集し、全用例をエクセルにまとめ分析した。ただ、’day’だけでも8000例近い用例が見つかったため、散文の用例は主要な作家2名の作品に限定した。その結果、副詞的に用いられる’day’や’night’のうち、時点を表していると思われる例では文脈からその時点が特定可能、あるいは特定でなければ意味が通じないと思われたのに対し、特定できない例では反復や習慣と解釈される例ばかりであることがわかった。そのため、古英語の通時的言語状態においては、現代英語における場合と同様に特定性が一定の役割を果たしているのではないかと考えられることがわかった。副詞的格を正面から分析対象とする研究は非常に限定的にしか見られない上、特定性という概念を用いて分析している研究は知る限りでは存在していないため、当該分野では初めての試みだと考えられる。また、特定性が現代英語と古英語の副詞的格両方に共通して働く原理であるとすれば、名詞が副詞的に用いられるという現象を解明する通言語的なアプローチであるということができると思われる。
