As a result of the analysis of the three manuscripts of Mandeville"s Travels in about 1400 AD we found each scribe discriminated between marked and unmarked endings of a given adjective in the positions following its headword, disregarding the difference of the number, the origin, and the pattern of inflection of an adjective in the earlier periods. Hence, contrary to the commonly established view the ending -e is far from being lost in Late Middle English. The markedness condition is indispensable for any promising investigation of morphological diachronic changes of adjectives.

通过对公元1400年前后《S游记》的三篇手稿的分析，我们发现每个抄写者都在形容词词首后面的位置区分有标记和无标记的词尾，而忽略了形容词在早期的数量、来源和屈折模式的差异。因此，与普遍公认的观点相反，结尾-e在中世纪英语晚期远未消失。标记条件对于任何有前景的形容词形态历时变化的研究都是不可或缺的。
