Experimental psychological studies on social consensus estimates within an intergroup context.

The purpose of this study was to examine how people make social consensus estimates for in-group and out-group within an intergroup context. Experiment I demonstrated that intergroup competition (competitive or non-competitive) had powerful effects on the perception of social consensus for both in-group and out-group. Experiment II revealed that stereotyping process was influenced by the variables, such as the source (i. e., in-group member or out-group member), the stereotypicality (i.e., stereotypic or counter-stereotypic), and the favorableness (i. e., positive or negative) of the stereotypic depictions. The liking for an out-group also had an important role in sharing stereotypic beliefs. Experiment III examined the social consensus for "gender differences" in a natural setting. The results showed that sex of participants affected the perceived consensus for their own attitudes about gender differences in both out-group and the general population("adults in general").
