Southern Modernism and Women Writers

This project examined and reevaluated the works of women writers, including Frances Newman and Julia Peterkin, from the American South, who have largely been ignored thus far in the history of American literature. The results indicate that the experimental works by these women writers, which were influenced by the modernist movement at that time, played a significant role in the blooming of Southern literature since the 1920’s, the Southern Literary Renaissance. This work clarifies their influence in literary style and thought upon canonical Southern authors, such as William Faulkner and Eudora Welty. The study finally clarifies the significance of these works in the history of Southern literature.
