本研究の目的は、イベント索引化モデルに基づいて日本人英語学習者(EFL学習者)の英文読解プロセスを検証することである。昨年度までの実証研究及び文献研究にて、テキストにおける情報間の状況的連続性がテキスト読解に果たす役割は明らかにされていることから、昨年度の後半に行った状況的連続性の高い情報を活性化させることによる効果の検証を引き続き行った。また、研究成果に広がりを持たせるべく、関連分野に関する研究として日本人英語学習者を対象とした英語教育学に関する研究にも着手した。ここでは交付申請書の中心となる前者の研究について報告する。状況的連続性の高い情報を活性化させることの効果についての実証研究について、昨年度の研究ではテキスト読解後における活性化はその効果が見られなかったことから、以下の2点を主な課題として研究を実施した:(1)テキスト読解直後において状況的連続性が高い情報を活性化することの効果が見られなかった理由の検討、(2)テキスト読解中において状況的連続性が高い情報を活性化することの効果を検討。まず(1)については、日本人大学生を対象として、昨年度の研究とほぼ同様の材料と手順にて追加実験を行った。その結果、状況的連続性から連想された情報は平均して1節から2節程度であり、イベント索引化モデルが規定する状況的連続性はテキスト読解後には情報の結びつきとして機能しない可能性が示唆された。次に、(2)についても、日本人大学生を対象として実験を実施した。分析の結果、読解中における状況的連続性の高い情報の活性化は学習者がテキスト情報を統合するプロセスにのみ影響していることが明らかとなった。(1)と(2)の結果を総合すると、状況的連続性の高い情報の活性化は主に読解中のプロセスの促進する効果があるものの、読解後の理解においてはその効果が見られなくなるという一定の結果が得られたと言える。
