English place-names with climatic elements contain words which etymologically mean "bright/ dark," "wet/ dry," "cold/ warm," summery/ wintry," and "windy." It has turned out that, in England, most of the place-names with climatic elements are so-called field-names, that is to say, the names given to the lands which are not used as habitations, such as arable, pasture, marsh, moorland, wasteland, woodland, and coppice. As the studies on field-names are growing increasingly in England, it is expected that the studies on English place-names with climatic elements can also make progress in accordance with this academic trend.The studies on English place-names with climatic elements should be interdisciplinary. Beginning with a close examination of etymology of each place-name from the standpoint of the historical study of the English language, it is essential to include, above all, climatological, geographical, and geological points of view.
