サイコパシーというパーソナリティ特性については、ヒトの道徳性の基盤となる脳神経メカニズムにおける機能低下が推測される。特に共感性は他者との円滑なコミュニケーションに不可欠であり、道徳的行動をもたらす重要な機能の一つであると考えられ、また、前頭前野がその機能にとって重要な脳領域であるとかんがえられることから、本研究では他者感情への共感という視点から道徳性に関する前頭前野における情報処理について、サイコパシーによる個人差を検討することとした。実験では, 被験者が他者の今後の処遇を決め、その決定に応じて他者の悲しみ表情の顔もしくは笑顔が提示されるという課題を用い、自らの意思決定による他者の顔表情の変化と、自らの意思決定とは無関係に表出される顔表情に対する情報処理に関して, 時間分解能に優れた事象関連脳電位を検討した。その結果、サイコパシー傾向の低群では、自らの行動と関連するか否かに関わらず悲しみの表情に対して350ms後に正中前頭部の陰性電位(N300)が惹起され、この電位が他者の悲しみに特異的な処理を反映する成分であることが明らかとなった。しかし、サイコパシー傾向の高群では、自らの行為によって他者の悲しみ表情が現れる場合には低群と同様にN300が惹起されるが、悲しみの表情が自らの行動と関係ないときには小さいことが明らかとなった。すなわち、本研究の結果から、サイコパシーの非共感的な側面として、無差別に他者の悲しみを処理するということができるわけではないということが示唆された。そのような情報処理の特異性により、サイコパシーでは他者への共感が適切に機能せず、悲しみを表出する他者に対する援助や救済の行動が動機づけられにくいということが予想される。
