项目摘要

本年度は、本研究において最も重要な論点となる「視覚」の問題系について、ベケットの後期作品に的を絞り、以下の点について検討した。1.ベケット後期作品に表出する視覚描写と同時代のフランス思想との照合S・コナーは、ベケットの作品が視覚の権威を懐疑的な検査に付すことで、西洋的な「視覚中心主義」を批判する潮流に加わっていると指摘する。この「視覚中心主義」とはアメリカの思想史家M・ジェイの用語であるが、ジェイの企ては、20世紀フランスの思想家が映像技術や監視装置といったものに引き寄せられる一方で、この伝統的視覚中心主義を批判するかたちで形成されてきたことを示すということであった。本研究では、ベケットの後期戯曲『芝居』、散文『人べらし役』『終わりなき光線の観察』を中心に考察し、ベケットが視覚と理性を結びつけた西欧哲学の伝統的解釈を踏まえたうえで「光」や「理性的なまなざし」を用いており、あたかもM・フーコーの言う「まなざしの権力」を操りながら、その権威的視覚に疑問を呈していることを証明した。2.ベケットが参照した哲学書との照合視覚の問題系を取り上げる過程で、とくにデカルトの『情念論』とべケットの視覚との関係を精査する必要性を見出した。この書は、デカルトが人間の眼の機能を説明するうちに、自ら説いた心身二元論の矛盾を露呈するものであり、最後の著作であると同時に最大の問題作でもある。ベケットが『終わりなき光線の観察』や『フィルム』といった作品のなかで「身体的な眼」と「精神的な眼」に分離した視覚を表現することが、最終的にはいわばデカルトの心身二元論批判に至るということは、この著作のはらむ問題と照らし合わせることによって明らかなものとなる。後期ベケット作品は、「視覚」にまつわる諸問題を検討するというプロセスそのものを提示することによって、心身の合一を説く現象学的視点を得るに至っていることを確認した。
