美術史研究の基本であり、最も重要な作業である様式研究に重点を置き、従来の研究では曖昧な見解が示されてきた素材・技法に関する問題も取り上げながら、平安時代の世俗画の最重要作品である<信貴山縁起絵巻>の制作年代及び制作環境に関する問題を中心として、十一世紀から十二世紀にかけて制作された世俗画の表現の変遷や系譜について考察を加えてきた。昨年度は文化財の模写の現場等での取材を積極的に行ったことで、筆者自身の素材・技法に関する理解が進み、<信貴山縁起絵巻>の制作年代に関する研究を大きく進展させることができた。一方で、様式分析を行う上では、素材・技法に関する研究との相関的な研究がいかに重要であるかということを再認識することとなった。本年度は更に大きな問題、すなわち十一世紀から十二世紀にかけて制作された世俗画の表現の変遷や系譜について様式的観点から解明するための基礎的研究として、自らの手で絵具、墨、紙、筆等を扱いながら素材・技法に関する基本的な体験を積み、現物調査の可能な重要作例を対象に素材・技法に関する情報及び資料を収集・整理することに重点を置いた。情報を多く収集し、今後広い視野を持って素材・技法について考察するために、平安時代世俗画の重要作例に留まらず、仏画、また鎌倉時代の作品等、様々な作品の現物調査を実施した。注目すべきは、絵具や墨と、接着剤、支持体との関係性についての解明が、制作年代や制作環境について考察する上で重要な問題を含んでいる作品が確認されたことである。制作年代や制作環境について充分に解決されていない重要作例について、従来のように調査結果の提示のみを主体とするのではなく、明確な目的を持って素材・技法研究に取り組み、様式研究とも関連させながら、新たな視点で根本的な問題について考察することの意義は甚だ大きく、今後の美術史分野の研究にとっても重要な問題を含んでいると考えられる。
