本研究の目的は、19世紀における東南アジア地域経済発展に果たした域内交易の役割を、貿易統計と記述史料を用いて明らかにすることである。19世紀後半以降、東南アジアは第一次産品輸出経済の発展により世界貿易とアジア間貿易に統合されていったが、それと共に第一次産品生産者の生活必需品の需給による東南アジア域内交易も成長を遂げた。それは、シンガポールといった中継港を経由して大陸部東南アジアの米や塩が島嶼部の大衆に供給され、交換に第一次産品生産・輸出が促進されたのであり、そこでは仲介商人が重要な役割を果たしたと推察される。しかしながら、未だ東南アジア域内交易の重要性と仲介商人活動の実態は貿易統計、史料に基づいて実証されていない。そこで、19世紀における東南アジア貿易に占める域内交易の比重と、そこに中心的役割を果たしたシンガポールの仲介商人の活動を貿易統計と史料に基づき考察する。本年度は、前年度から引き続き東南アジア域内交易に関する史料の収集と読み込みを進めるとともに、その成果を英語論文として公表し、また最終成果として博士論文の執筆を行った。19世紀のシンガポールで発行されていた商業誌シンガポール・フリープレスのマイクロフィルムを購入し、そこから仲介商人の活動に関する情報を抽出した。また、マレーシア・サラワク州のサラワク博物館図書室を訪問し、19世紀に発行されたサラワク官報から東南アジア域内交易に関する情報を抽出した。そして、国際ジャーナルのSoutheast Asian Studiesに、19世紀前半の域内交易の成長に果たしたシンガポールの役割に関する英語論文を投稿し、2013年12月に掲載された。これまでの研究をまとめる形で博士論文「191世紀における東南アジア域内交易の発展―シンガポールの役割を中心に―」を執筆し、2014年3月に博士(地城研究)の学位を授与された。
