本研究は、近代アジアのマクロな域内貿易・金融の発展に、実践者の活動というミクロな視点からアプローチするため、１９世紀のアジア域内貿易と金融送金の発達に、現地の商人や金融業者が果たした役割を史料から解明することを目的とする。具体的には19世紀にアジア域内で商取引や金融送金を主導した西洋代理商会と華僑送金に注目する。前者については英ケンブリッジ大学所蔵のジャーディン・マセソン商会の経営文書の収集分析を進めており、そこからはアジアで活動した西洋系商社が西欧・アジア間のみならず、アジア域内の金融送金に携わっていた実態がみえてきた。この成果を取り込んだ研究報告を国際学会で報告した(報告題目China Inside Out、学会Chinese Economy in the Long run、2022年10月英国マンチェスター大学）。後者の華僑送金については、東南アジアに出稼ぎに渡った中国労働者が、故郷に送った手紙兼送金証書である僑批（Qiaopi）を参考に、国際貿易・金融の発達の中で華僑送金がどのように対応・進化したかを検討した。特にシンガポールを中心とした送金システムが１９世紀の初頭から中国向け商品貿易の発達と密接に連動する形で発展し、それが19世紀後半にマクロ経済関係の変化に対応した進化を示したことが判明しつつある。この成果に基づく研究報告を客員研究員として滞在中のケンブリッジ大学のワークショップにて報告した（報告題目Development of Overseas Chinese Remittances in Singapore、ワークショップTransregional East Asia、2023年3月英国ケンブリッジ大学）。

This study aims at explaining the development of intra-regional trade and finance in modern times, the activities of practitioners, the development of intra-regional trade and finance in the 19th century, and the historical results of local businessmen and financial industries. In the 19th century, the Chinese business community was dominated by the Chinese business community. The former is a collection analysis of the management documents of the British and Chinese universities, and the latter is a collection analysis of the activities of the Western trading companies and Western European financial institutions. The results of this research report are reported by the International Society (report title China Inside Out, Society of Chinese Economy in the Long Run, October 2022, UK). The latter refers to the development of international trade and finance, and discusses the development of overseas Chinese. In particular, since the beginning of the 19th century, China has developed into a close link between the development of commodity trade and the evolution of trade relations in the second half of the 19th century. The results of this research are reported by guest researchers in the Development of Overseas Chinese Remittances in Singapore, Transregional East Asia, UK in March 2023.
