近江六角氏の権力構造や分国下の武家権力の存在形態について検討を行い、以下の通り論文化を進めた。第一に、六角氏の文書発給における当主と家臣、家臣相互の関係性を明らかにすることで、国人一揆が当主を推戴・擁立したとする従来の評価に見直しを迫った。第二に、近江永原氏の動向を手掛かりに、近江の国人領主層の多様な展開を、近江における政治的・社会的諸条件のなかで構造的に把握した。第三に、六角氏の有力被官で守護代の伊庭氏の動向を追い、伊庭氏は六角氏当主とは必ずしも対立関係にはなく、守護代の強大化が権力内の矛盾を惹起したとする従来の理解に再考を促した。近江全域を視野に入れた検討も進め、口頭報告を行った。まず、近江における浄土真宗の展開をまとめ、武家が真宗に帰依する動向は六角氏権力下の江南よりも浅井氏権力下の江北で顕著にみられることを明らかにした。次に、織田信長入部以前の近江に存在した四つの城下町(石寺・上平寺・小谷・清水山)の比較検討を行い、天台系山岳寺院をベースに城下町形成がなされ、16世紀においても武家の居住域と寺院空間が混在している様相を確認した。自身の研究を戦国期研究の潮流に位置づけるため、近年の注目すべき研究動向について成果と課題をまとめ、報告する機会を得た。第一に、中近世移行期の連続・断絶を説く諸研究の多くが近江の事例に依拠しているものの、戦国期近江の固有の情勢が必ずしも踏まえられていないことを指摘し、網羅的な史料の検討を通じて近江の地域性を踏まえる必要性を提起した。第二に、移行期の段階的把握において戦争論が重要であることを確認した上で、各段階の戦争の内実やその要因を丁寧に解き明かすこと、織豊政権の軍事行動を過大に評価するのではなく、移行期のうねりのなかで正しく位置づけることの重要性を指摘した。
