本研究は、ビザンツ帝国が多方面からの対外的危機を受けていた7-10世紀を切り抜けるにあたり、対外政策の重要な要因となった「テマ」やそれに準ずる軍制・地方統治制度を、とくに辺境地域でどのように運用したかを明らかにすることを目的としている。本年度は予定では引き続きビザンツ・イスラーム関係、スラヴ関係の考察を進めつつ、ビザンツと北方との関係に視野を広げ、最終的には比較史的視点からの考察を行うことを目標としていた。しかしながら、帝国東北部のコーカサスとの関係についての研究を進める中で、この地域についてはこれまでに得られた対イスラーム関係の研究成果と接続して考えることの重要性が示唆されたため、方針を修正して北の環黒海世界や北東のコーカサスを含めた、広い意味での「帝国東方」についての研究を進めることになった。具体的には、当初は予定通りに『帝国統治論』における北方のルーシやペチェネグについての記述を分析し、近年の研究と照らしあわせて帝国にとっての位置づけを考察した。その後コーカサス地域の記述へと分析対象を移す中で、同地域のアルメニア人やグルジア人の動向が、帝国東方境域における対イスラーム政策における制度運用と密接に関わっていることが示された。成果については国内では日本西洋史学会や早稲田大学高等研究所セミナーにおいて、国外でもグルジア・トビリシにおいて開催されたタオ・クラルジェティ国際学会において報告を行った。また10-11月にはグルジア・アルメニア現地の史跡を調査する機会も得た。重要史料『帝国統治論』の翻訳については、名古屋大学文学研究科の村田光司氏とともに引き続き作業中である。
