Secretin activated oxytocin neurons of the supraoptic nucleus and facilitated oxytocin release centrally. Local application of secretin into the supraoptic nucleus facilitated social recognition/ memory. The facilitative effects of secretin upon social recognition/ memory were inhibited by an oxytocin receptor antagonist injected into the medial amygdala or in oxytocin receptor-deficient mice. Furthermore, oxytocin treatment restored social recognition/ memory in secretin receptor-deficient mice. All these results suggest that newly defined secretin-oxytocin system plays a critical role in regulating social memory/ recognition.
