项目摘要

自然言語において、例えば「信じる」「知る」「尋ねる」といった態度報告動詞が異なるタイプの節を埋め込むことが知られている。例えば、「信じる」は平叙節のみを、「尋ねる」は疑問詞節のみを埋め込むことができるが、「知る」は平叙節と疑問詞節のどちらも埋め込むことができる。この動詞が埋め込む説タイプに対する制約は選択制約と呼ばれる。本研究では、以上のような異なる態度報告動詞の異なる選択制約を意味論的に解明することを目的とした。この研究課題は、そもそも平叙文と疑問文の意味とはどのようなものかという、言語学のより根本的な問題の解明にもつながるものである。本研究では、平叙文は命題を指し、疑問文は命題の集合を刺すというHamblin (1973) に端を発する意味論的モデルを発展させ、さらに態度報告動詞の意味の詳細な分析を行うことで、選択制約の分析をおこなった。例えば、日本語の「尋ねる」や英語の”wonder”に関しては、その選択制約が動詞に内在的な無知（ignorance）に関する意味要素から説明できることを明らかにした。また、このように構築した節タイプに関する理論を、日本語に当てはめ、疑問詞「か」に関する新たな合成的意味論を提唱した。この意味論では、「か」が代替要素 (alternatives) の集合を投射する形態素と考えることによって、日本語における不定名詞「誰か」における「か」と、例えば「誰が来たか」にあるような疑問詞「か」に統一的な意味論を与えることに成功した。さらに、この統一的意味論は、「太郎か花子が来た」などにおける選言の「か」へと拡張することができた。ここで構築された理論は、疑問、不定詞、選言に通底する通言語的な意味論メカニズムを「代替要素 (alternatives) の集合を投射」という形で捉えたものと考えることができる。
