本年度は，幼児が発話と身振りの統合的理解に失敗する要因に，発話と身振りの統合に必要な処理資源の不足を仮定し，従来よりも認知処理の負荷を低減した課題を用いることで，この仮説を検討した。まず，幼児49名 (年中児24名と年長児25名) を対象に，ある動作に関するメッセージを発話と身振りで表すビデオを提示し，その後，4枚の写真からメッセージと最も一致する写真を選択するように教示した (例えば，「投げます」といいながらチェストパスの身振りをするビデオを提示し，その後，野球ボールをオーバースローで投げる写真，バスケットボールをチェストパスで投げる写真，扉を両手で押し開ける写真，カメラを構える写真を提示し，選択を求めた)。この際，発話に「こうやって」という指示語発話が有る条件と無い条件を参加者間で設定した。課題はSekine et al. (2015) と同様であったが，認知処理の負荷を低減するために，次の４点を修正して実施した：①発話の文末表現を「・・・ています」から「・・・ます」に変更した。②一部の選択肢の写真の動作を弁別性が高まるように修正した。③選択肢の写真の背景には可能な範囲で他の刺激が写り込まないよう作成した。④発話と身振りの提示回数を1回から2回に変更した。その結果，先行研究では，指示語発話無し条件の年中児は発話と身振りを統合できなかったのに対して，本研究の指示語発話無し条件の年中児は，一部の動作で統合的理解が可能になり，仮説を部分的に支持した。しかしながら，統合を妨げる要因には，発話と身振りの提示方法 (実演かビデオか) の方がより強く影響することが示唆された。また，成人と同程度に統合が可能であると思われてきた年長児であっても，動作別の分析結果から，統合能力が成人と同等ではない可能性が示された。
