From April 2019 to March 2020, Dr. Grace Ting continued to work on a book manuscript titled “Minor Intimacies: Queerness, the Normative, and the Everyday.”At the same time, she made fruitful progress into new areas of research.Overall, progress was smooth, although it was disrupted at the end of this period due to problems such as library access during the pandemic.During this period, she gave research presentations in Tokyo, Bangkok, and Lisbon, with additional presentations planned for the spring of 2020 that were cancelled due to the pandemic. These presentations were on topics such as attacks against gender studies, the future of the field of queer Asian studies, and queer and feminist Japanese webcomics. They showed not only attention to networking and creating dialogue with other gender studies scholars in Japan, but also disseminating research to an international audience. Cancelled presentations were on intersections of Japanese, Taiwanese, and Asian American literature, as well as Asian and Asian American comics. These presentations would have taken place in the cities of Boston, Ann Arbor, and D.C. in the United States and helped bridge Japanese literary studies with other fields such as Sinophone studies and Asian American studies.Dr. Ting also published academic journal articles on gender studies and anime and manga studies and worked on revising articles on Japanese women writers that showcased her interdisciplinary knowledge of Japanese girls’ culture and queer theory.
