本年度の研究は、荀子の術思想を漢代以降の中国思想に照らし合わせ、後世における展開を考察した。まず、前年度の研究に引き続き、荀子の術思想の身体的な側面を検討した上、後世における展開を辿った。前年度に発表した荀子の「談説の術」は、『荀子』の成相篇が「隠語」という謎かけの文体を活用していることから、メタファーを特徴とする一種の話術だと考えられた。一方、古代中国の話術といえば、戦国時代の縦横家があげられるが、縦横家の術は「長短術」とも称され、前漢時代にもその存在を示している。『史記集解』に引用される『漢書音義』の定義によれば、長短術の言葉は「隠謬」であり、相手を激怒させるために用いられた。荀子の「談説の術」は、長短術を儒教の礼教に適うよう改造したものだとすれば、唐代に作られた『長短経』は、王道と覇道の両方を説いている点において、荀子流の話術の後世における反響だと考えられる。なお、荀子の術思想の身体面に関しては、「談説の術」の他に、人相術についても考察を行なった。戦国時代、道家のテキストが「人心の難解さ」を問題として提示したことに始まり、古代中国では人間の内面を明らかにする方法が模索されていた。『孔子家語』礼運篇によれば、人の内心に潜む美醜を明らかにするのは、礼の他に何もない。この点において、礼は方士達の人相術より優れていると考えられ、このような人材選抜術としての礼思想は、明らかに荀子に遡るのである。最後に、漢代儒学における術数思想が、如何に荀子の礼論と関連しているのかを、月令と明堂を手がかりに調査した。礼の秩序において、月令は時間を構成し、明堂は空間を構成する。清代考証学における漢学の議論を通じて、「術」としての礼と、宋学の「理」としての礼を比較し、両者が構成する秩序のあり方の異同を検討した。
