本研究は、近代西洋の三つの身体類型を旅券制度の推移を手掛かりに追跡しようとするものである。この目的に即して、本年度はベルリン自由大学に招聘研究員として在籍し、旅券制度発達の歴史的文脈である近代的グローバリゼーションの理論的知見を習得しようと試みた。いうまでもなく旅券制度は元来、市民の国家間移動を管理するツールとしてフランス革命以来発展してきたものである。それゆえ西洋社会でそうした国境横断的な移動が規模を大きくするにつれて、旅券制度の重要性も増していったはずである。そこで本研究では、19-20世紀を通じて行われたトランスナショナルな移動の諸相（出稼ぎ移民、漂泊民、グランドツアー、ツーリズム等々）をできるだけ広く目配りし、近代的な国家間移動をグローバル・ヒストリーの視点から把握することを試みた。以上のような理論的視座の習得と並行して実証研究のための準備作業も進め、旅券写真においてベルティヨン法が応用されるまでのプロセスの解明を試みた。具体的には、まず犯罪学関連の専門雑誌からベルティヨン法に関する論文を抽出し、ドイツにおけるその受容の諸様態を分析した。次に個人識別の問題をめぐる当時の諸議論を整理し、効率的な識別法に関する同時代の研究論文を調査した。それらの成果を踏まえつつ、次年度では旅券が個人識別のツールとなる中で、いかに犯罪者特定のノウハウが旅券写真へと応用されていったのか、それをめぐってどのような議論が戦わされたのか、について調査を進めていく。
