项目摘要

本研究の目的は、「神社横断的視点」と「東アジア的広がり」のもとに、神仏習合と修験道の関係について、日本において神仏習合が色濃く進んだ中世（１１世紀～１６世紀）を中心に検討することであるが具体的には、時代と神社を絞って調査を進めることとなる。本年度は、1）厳島神社における神仏習合　2)「人と動物のかかわり」という観点、3)言語文化史的調査の3つの問題に着目して、文献史料収集精読による研究を進めるとともに、シンポジウム発表にて意見交換を行い、知見を深めた。1）厳島神社の神仏習合は、昨年度から調査を進めているテーマであるが、本年度は、当該の神社が近世おいていち早く「神仏分離」をすすめた背景について検討を進めた。主たる原因として、政治ー経済的原因に注目した成果を得た。神仏習合を単に宗教思想の問題に限定せず、社会的背景から見ていく必要を指摘した。同じ現象が出雲大社にも見られることから、神社横断的視点の研究が深まった。2）については、日本古来の「人」と「動物（禽獣・けもの・けだもの）」の関わりや関係・相違に関する文献学的調査を行い、当該の認識の背景に、仏教・神道・修験道・道教等の思想的影響があることを検討した。神仏習合と修験道の具体的な事例として考察が深まった。3）船山徹『仏教漢語　語義解釈』の検討を通して、漢語における伝統的語義解釈(仏教伝来前から存在した儒教経典と道家文献、字書に示される解釈)と、インドの原典(サンスクリット語文献)におけるその語の意味と用例とを対比させ、中国・インド双方から二重の意味を付与された漢字仏教語の価値を検討。当該の作業により、東アジア的広がりにおいて、シンクレティズムの進行・発展の背景にある、言語＝文化的問題に対する知見を深めた。
