项目摘要

本研究の目的は、故郷を離れた移住者作家によって代表されることが多い英国モダニズム文学の特徴に、移動と思想の自由を意味するコスモポリタニズムがあると比較的単純に見なされていることを批判的に再検討すべく、移住者作家の作品の多様性と矛盾を、ヨーロッパ周辺で難民経験をした作家の著作物と文化的活動を精査することで明らかにし、モダニズム文学と難民のテーマの関係を新たなかたちで解明することである。具体的には、20世紀中葉に地中海沿岸地域を移動し、亡国者 (exile)、移住者 (refugee)、難民 (the displaced, the stateless)としての経験を書いた英国の作家を取り上げ、彼らが従来考えられてきたような「イギリス帝国主義の文脈に位置づけられる作家」というよりは、むしろBritish Council等の機関の活動を通じて現地の文化と交流し、その近代化・ヨーロッパ化の過程に関わることで、自身の文学を狭義のイギリス文学から引き剥がし、矛盾や断絶を含んだ経験を描くヨーロッパ・モダニズム文学の地図の中に再配置したことを明らかにすることである。2022年度には、Olivia Manningによる文献を読み進め、また、その過程で重要な関連作家として浮上したRebecca Westのバルカン半島のルポルタージュ的作品3冊を読み、分析を進め、日本英文学会東北支部のシンポジウムで発表を行った。また、2021年度より継続していた上記テーマに関連する論文2本が刊行された。
