モンゴル文語は13世紀以来今日に至るまで各地のモンゴル族の書き言葉として用いられてきたことから、時代的、地域的に多様な文献資料が大量に残されている。これまでは保存されている資料の利用が制限されていたことから、原本の鮮明な影印の公刊や研究は立ち遅れた状態にあったが、近年モンゴル国と中国を中心に資料の公開促進が進み、印刷技術の発達に見合った多数の良質の影印資料が利用できるようになった。これと並行して、研究者にとってはパソコンによるデジタル画像処理の技術の進歩によって、個人でこうした影印資料を利用した研究を行う環境が整ってきた。本研究はこうした状況をふまえて、モンゴル文語資料の影印資料をデジタル画像化して、各時代、各地域、各ジャンルごとにモンゴル文字の字形、単語の綴り、語法、語彙といった言語的特徴を文献ごとに蒐集整理した上で、700年以上にわたるモンゴル文語の歴史的（通時的）な実態と変遷の過程に光を当てることを目的としている。研究では、まず13世紀以来のモンゴル文語の文献資料を時代、地域、ジャンル（内容）ごとに文献を選定し、それらをデジタル画像化して、画像処理を行う。次に、デジタル化した画像から単語と文字を切り出し、それらに文献名、出現位置（巻、頁、行）、ローマ字転写等のタグを付け、それらをデータベースに登録することにより、どの単語がどの文献のどの位置に現れ、どのような語形、字形で表記されているか、検索・表示できるようにする。このデータベース・システムはインターネットによって公開し、誰でも、いつでも、どこからでも利用できるサービスとして提供する。データベースの構築を進めながら、各文献の表記上の特徴を整理し、13世紀以来の書き言葉としてのモンゴル文語の歴史的な変遷の過程を明らかにする。
