项目摘要

本研究は、14世紀末にラテン語のウルガタ聖書から英訳されたウィクリフ訳聖書（Wycliffite Bible; WB）における語彙・文法が原典での語彙・文法から具体的にどのような影響を受けているのか、また、当時および後世の英語の語彙・文法体系にどの程度影響を与えたのかという共時的・通時的課題に着手する。複数の一次文献を活用し、WB全体を対象とした実証的な調査を行いつつ、14世紀末から現代英語までの変遷史を詳細に分析する。本研究によって、ラテン語の翻訳による影響を従来指摘されていた、あるいは、その影響が見過ごされてきた語彙・文法の実態を見直すことを目指す。当該年度は、WBの言語研究として重要な先行文献を読み進め、WBの言語に関する基本的な理解を深めつつ、パイロット・スタディとして、「必要」を表す同時代の動詞群の選択におけるラテン語の影響に関する調査を行い、国内学会の口頭発表で成果を披露したことが主な実績として挙げられる。研究開始前はWBの語彙と文法に等しく焦点を置くことを考えていたが、先行研究を読み進める過程で、文法（特に動詞以外）の研究量が不足していることが分かり、今後の研究の方向性がより明確に定まった。また、パイロット・スタディは必ずしもWBを対象とはしていなかったが、先行研究での見解とは異なり、ラテン語からの翻訳作品における動詞の選択や用法はラテン語原典の影響に一概に帰せられるものではなく、本来語と巧みに使い分けられていたことが分かった。本研究は中英語期におけるラテン語語彙・文法の受容という、より大きな枠組みの研究の一環として行っているが、当時の英語はラテン語の語彙・文法を盲目的に取り入れていたのではなく、既存の語彙・文法体系を考慮・尊重したうえで、何をどの程度まで受容するのかが見極められていたという、前回の科研の成果をも確かめる結果が得られた。
