本研究は、アメリカ高等教育のヒストリオグラフィの構築を試みるものである。具体的には、研究大学を偏重する一面的な進歩史観を修正し、「多様性」に焦点をあてた複眼的な解釈を提起する歴史学研究法を検討する。その理由は、現在の日本の高等教育研究が、時代遅れの偏った歴史認識に依拠したまま、アメリカの研究大学に近代化モデルを追い求めてきた結果、日本の高等教育システムが大衆化についていけずに制度疲労を起こしているからである。この状態から脱却するためには、すでに大衆化した日本の高等教育の実情に合う政策が必要であり、その際に参照されてきたアメリカ・モデルの歴史認識を修正する必要がある。このような問題意識のもと、研究１年目の令和４年度は、最新のアメリカ高等教育史通史のひとつであるロジャー・ガイガー著（２０１６）『アメリカ高等教育史』の翻訳を行った。本著はハーバードの創立から１９４５年までを扱ったものであるが、主に１７・１８世紀の部分を研究協力者の小野里・藤井が、１９世紀中の部分を研究代表者の原と研究分担者の原田が、１９世紀末から２０世紀以降の部分を研究分担者の五島・間篠が担当し、翻訳及び校正を進めていった。計画では令和４年度中に上記翻訳書を出版の予定ではあったが、出版社がＣＯＶＩＤ－１９の影響で一時作業を停止せざるを得ない状況となったため、計画を組みなおした。現在の予定では令和５年５月中の刊行を目指している。
