本研究は、カタルシス概念と筋構成論(ミュートス概念)をアリストテレスの『詩学』の文脈に即して改めて見直してみることを目的とした。従って、次の三点が主な研究の課題となった。(1)アリストテレスの筋構成論とミ-メ-シス概念との関係。ミ-メ-シスの具体的ジャンルとして、音楽の一部が排除されている点に注目すべきである。また悲劇と他のジャンルとの種差は、七章と八章の「出来事の構成」つまり「筋」にあると一般に考えられているが、さらに十八章の「メタバシス(転換)」という概念を考慮に入れるべきであることがわかった。十三章と十四章の矛盾は「メタバシス」を考慮すると解ける可能性がある。(2)カタルシスと筋構成論との関係。今までの通念を打ち破る異種療法的解釈まで提出されているほど、『詩学』研究の中で今日最も盛んなテーマである。第四章の「模倣による認識的な快」がカタルシスに関係するとみなすのが最近の解釈に共通する点である。「模倣による」を「筋による」と置き換えれば悲劇の定義と結びつくからである。(3)カタルシスとミ-メ-シス概念との関係。カタルシスが模倣一般に認められる効果であるかは(2)の場合と同様に解釈者によって異なっている。筋構成からみるとカタルシスは劇詩に認められ、感情効果からみると悲劇にのみ認められる。こうした解釈の相違は「ム-サ(音楽・文芸)とソフィア(知)という観点を導入すればもっと明快に把捉することができると思われる。最近の研究の動向などから以上三点を解明してきた。しかしム-サが音楽と文学に乖離していく時代に生きたアリストテレスの芸術観は、ソクラテス以前にまで遡ってム-サの内容の変化の過程の中においてみなければ充分に理解されないということがわかった。この点は今後の課題としたい。
