本研究では、海洋プラスチックごみの地域社会への影響を分析し、解決へ向けステークホルダーとの協働体制による解決策について、特に海洋プラスチックの直接的被害を受けている地域における新たなエコツーリズムのプログラムによる課題解決を探るものである。2022年前半はコロナ禍の影響で、本研究活動のモデルケースとなる西表島の活動が停止期間中であったため、主に先行研究と研究アプローチの課題点の整理を行い、早稲田大学教育学部とアジア10か国を繋ぐ環境教育プログラムでの研究課題発表を行い、環境教育の切り口でプログラム化に関する知見を得た。その後、教育的自然体験プログラムで先駆けである「ホールアース自然学校」にて、自然体験型のツーリズムと地域文化の共創の歴史的変化を調査した。後半は同じ海洋プラスチックごみ問題で観光業にダメージを受ける京丹後市の調査を実施する同志社大学政策学部との共同勉強会を行い、市民参加型のビーチクリーン活動について実践知を共有した。さらに早稲田大学では、これらの調査をとりまとめ、環境総合センターにて、イオン環境財団主催の研究会で発表を行い、産官学の連携について提案を行った。年度の終盤では沖縄県観光コンベンションビューローにて、コロナ禍でダメージを受けた観光における新たなエコツーリズムの有り方について、今年度の活動を取りまとめて発表を行い、フィードバックを得た。これをもって来年度は西表島での実証を行いたいと考えている。
