この研究は,日本企業の特性を事業分野の多角化・国際化(多国籍企業化)・ソフト化(イノベーション)の観点から明らかにした上で,それぞれの特性を規定する要因および相互の関連性を分析することを目的として行われたものである.これらの研究に共通的な点は通商産業省「企業活動基本調査」の目的外使用に関する承認を受けた企業データを分析の基礎としている点である.この研究では,(i)企業の親会社と子会社との関係が研究開発に与える影響に関し,親企業からの技術情報のフローをうける企業は自社の研究開発費の支出が減少し,子会社へ技術情報を流出する企業は自社の研究開発費の支出を増加させていること,(ii)企業の経営資源の蓄積が多国籍化に及ぼす影響に関し,本社における研究開発が生み出すイノベーション・サービス生産の規模は,海外生産のシェアーを低下させ,国内での生産の規模が海外生産に与える影響は,市場により異なること,(iii)負債比率の決定要因に関し,企業の財務行動のうち負債比率について,有形固定資産が多いほど,また企業規模が大きいほど負債比率が高まること,(iv)企業の多角化を促進する要因として,研究開発が正で有意であること,付加価値の有形固定資産に対する比率も正で有意となること等が示された.また,産業格付けが時間の経過につれて変化することから産業毎の集計データとパネルデータでの分析結果に違いの出ること,付加価値額を基準とした企業の産業分類が重要であることなどが明らかにされた.
