1996〜97年度にかけて実施した第3回「現代青年の芸術意識と芸術活動調査」より作成した単年度データファイルを用いて、学生の実演芸術の需要動向を社会・経済的要因がどのように規定しているかを分析した。さらに、同調査の第1回(1985年度)と第2回(1991年度)のデータファイルを用いて、時系列的な比較分析を行った。実演芸術の需要動向に影響をおよぼす社会・経済的要因として、本調査では、(1)生活時間、(2)経済的状況、(3)地域、(4)個人の文化資本または文化的環境(家族の影響や稽古事など)の4つの要因群についての質問項目を設定している。分析の結果から、(3)の地域的要因に関連して、鑑賞機会の豊富な東京圏を含む関東地域でのライブの鑑賞経験率がいずれの分野でも高く、近畿地域では大衆芸能の鑑賞経験率が高いこと、(3)の個大の文化資本に関連して、舞踊系、音楽系、華・茶道系の稽古事経験者が伝統演劇、現代演劇,オペラ・ミュージカル、舞踊・舞踏・バレエ、クラシック音楽の5分野で高い鑑賞経験率を示しており、家族の勧めなどにより個人が受けてきたプライベートな芸術教育が、これらの実演芸術分野に対する関心を高め、実演芸術の需要を喚起していることなどが明らかとなった。時系列的分析からは、第1回調査に比較して、第2回、第3回調査のライブの鑑賞経験率が全体として低下している結果が示された。有意標本による調査であるために単純な比較は難しく、サンプルの構造や設問の相違にも留紘して、集計結果を比較・解釈していく必要はあるが、小型・軽量で臨場感のある再生を可能にするデジタル技術を駆使した視聴覚メディアの出現・普及に加えて、1980年代後半のバブル経済と1990年代に入ってのその崩壊、そし,て現在に至るまでの景気の低迷といった経済環境の動きがこうしたライブの鑑賞経験率の推移にも影響を与えているのではないかと考えられる。
