2021年度は、COVID-19感染拡大による国内外の移動制限等の影響により、日本でのオンライン調査、オンラインでの研究発表を中心に実施した。本年度に実施予定であった一部研究計画については、2022年のインドネシア渡航時に繰り越して実施している。以下では、2021年に日本でオンラインで実施した研究実績を記す。オンライン調査では、バンカ・ブリトゥン文化がどのように語られているのかをPhysonを用いたTwitterの投稿内容の分析から明らかにしようと試みた。また、オンライン通話サービス（Zoom、Whatsapp）を使用し、歴史や文化の語られ方を生活史の聞き取りから検討した。Twitter分析では、バンカ島・ブリトゥン島ともに市街地での投稿数が目立っており、特にブリトゥン島では観光客による投稿が目立った。全体として文化に関する投稿は観光に結び付けられる傾向があったが、「華人にとってインドネシアの中で最も過ごしやすい地域だ」というような投稿も見受けられた。これは研究課題の(c)商品化される地域文化に関連し、成果の一部をオンラインで開催されたThe 12th International Convention of Asia Scholarsにて発表した。加えて、インフォーマントの生活史を中心に聞き取りを行った。彼らの居住地の変遷や移動、伝統儀礼が多民族で実践されていことなど、研究課題(a)地域住民の居住区域と移動に関する情報を収集した。研究課題（c）商品化される地域文化については、観光業従事者らの地域文化発信に関する研修にオンラインで参加し、さらにSNSで地域文化を発信する個人に聞き取りを行った。COVID-19により研究計画を変更せざるを得なかったが、オンラインを活用することで研究自体を中断せず継続できた。コロナ禍におけるオンラインでの研究活動に関して、雑報２件を発表した。
