PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
Educational Resources to Promote SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Confidence
Educational Resources to Promote SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Confidence is a supplement to an existing Science
Education Partnership Award, Frontiers in Cancer Research (“Frontiers”). The parent grant was awarded to the
Science Education Partnership (SEP) at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (“Fred Hutch”). For this
proposal, SEP has partnered with the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) headquartered at Fred Hutch,
and the Fred Hutch / UW Cancer Consortium’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE).
The Frontiers parent program is designed to meet two goals of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and
National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS): to increase the STEM content knowledge and
pedagogical skills of teachers and to engage students, especially those from underserved populations, in basic
and clinical medical research. Overall, the Frontiers parent grant aims to increase public understanding of
basic molecular and cellular biology, how this knowledge informs research questions, and how clinical
research translates into cancer therapies and cures. Our program also explores the ethical implications of
research-related topics. Another goal of the parent grant is to introduce students, particularly those from
backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, to career possibilities in research. This supplement
builds on the existing aims of the parent grant as well as the stated needs of educators and community
outreach specialists.
1) The supplement aims to inspire vaccine confidence in students and community members through high
quality scientific animations, informational videos targeted to youth, and recorded scientific talks and tours. We
will explain the science of vaccine development, address common misconceptions, build resources for
Spanish-speaking communities, and expand our existing video offerings to include materials created by
students targeted towards youth. Additionally, we will develop videos of vaccine research and testing being
conducted through the CoVPN network for our Hutch@Home virtual outreach series.
2) We will also create lessons and educational materials that can be used with the resources we develop.
Drawing on our extensive curriculum experience, we will develop lesson plans about vaccine science that
utilize our new videos and animations and that can be used by secondary school science teachers.
Additionally, we will develop scripts and templates to support community health educators and trainers use the
newly developed resources.
