Project Summary
The Specific Pathogen Free Baboon Research Resource (SPFBRR) is the only national
research resource of SPF18 baboons available to NIH grantees; intramural research programs
of federal agencies, including the FDA, NSF and NIH; and other sponsors of biomedical
research (private foundations, pharmaceutical companies, and contract research organizations).
Absolutely unique in the world, the olive baboons (Papio anubis) in the SPFBRR have an
extensive bioexclusion list of 18 pathogens normally found in wild and captive baboon colonies.
In fact, baboons from the SPFBRR are free of all known adventitious viruses that commonly
infect wild and captive baboons. A major challenge during the first few years following
relocation of the colony to the Keeling Center has been developing the extensive repertoire of
serology and PCR testing assays and strategies to ensure that the SPF18 animals remain free
of excluded pathogens. This A&R Administrative Supplement will allow us to purchase two
pieces of equipment: a Bio-Plex 200 System to develop inhouse baboon specific multiplexed
serology assays, and a QX200 ddPCR System elucidate the pathogenesis of incipient virus
infections in naïve olive baboons. This request directly addresses Specific Aim 2 of the P40
Resource Core to expand the breeding resource and Specific Aim 1 of the Research Core to
develop molecular diagnostic assays to support the SPFBRR. The proposed study is within the
scope of the parent award and will stimulate additional activities leading to the progress of the
overall goals of the parent award. The proposed study does not overlap with already funded
work in the parent award.
