Paying attention on the banks of the Yamuna: the making of attentive minds, bodies and politics in Delhi

My proposed research, which will involve fieldwork at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), takes as its starting point the question of why the student has become a site for attentional anxieties in India, but aims to move beyond this to look at how ideologies and practices of attention underpin wider forms of social life, articulating with economics, politics and religion. I specifically want to examine three broad themes: Are there particular Indian modes of attention? How does attention articulate with the wider economy? And how does attention shape the practice of politics in India?
