My thesis, a social and intellectual history, will examine shifting attitudes to witchcraft as a femininecrime in the Holy Roman Empire between 1480 to 1560. The European 'witch craze' reached its peakin many European countries between 1560 and 1660, and resulted in the execution of roughly 50,000people, eighty per cent of whom were women (Robisheaux, 2013). This statistic, however, masksnotable regional and temporal variations: prior to 1560 the numbers of men and women tried in theEmpire was nearly equal. My doctoral research will assess how far elite publications influencedpopular links between witchcraft and women, and suggest how the witch became predominantlyfeminine after 1560. Part 1 will assess elite and popular attitudes to witchcraft and gender between1480 and 1520, when significant trials occurred, and influential demonologies appeared. Part 2 willinvestigate whether these attitudes changed between 1520 and 1560, when the number of witchcrafttrials and interest in demonological works reduced markedly.
