White Other? Jewish Experiences of Whiteness in Twentieth Century South Africa 1937 - 1999

This project will focus on Jewish whiteness in South Africa during the apartheid period, the years immediately proceeding it and the years immediately afterwards. Through a mixture of oral history, archival and published sources, this research will explore the ways in which Jewish whiteness was conditional on conforming to social and political norms with a focus on the relationship between transgressive Jews and Jewish institutions. This project uses the Jewish community in South Africa as a starting point to examine the relationship between race, transgression and Jewishness and the functioning of apartheid in South Africa.
