The project is situated at the core of historical and contemporary aesthetics. In revising the concept of the aesthetic, I deviate from the view of disinterested pleasure experienced on the basis of formal features, advocated by formalist readers of Kant such as Greenberg and Beardsley, moving instead towards the recent broadening of the notion. This broadening has connected the aesthetic with human 'vital concerns' (Sibley, 2001), human nature (Carroll, 2004), natural 'play' (Matthen, 2015), everyday experience (Saito, 2001), promise of happiness (Nehamas, 2007) and feeling 'at home' (Scruton, 2009). Important historical precedents include Schiller's (2016) relationship between the aesthetic, drives, and personal and sociocultural development, alongside Langer's (1953) analysis of the relationship between the aesthetic and 'human feeling'. The guiding thought of this research project is that these seemingly disparate emphases in fact converge on an overlooked but interesting question: what is the relationship between aesthetic experience and our interpersonal affairs? Can we make a case for aesthetic experience as crucially linked to our ability to negotiate with others, establish commonalities with others' nature, or be open to others' differences? Building on the aforementioned approaches, the project will thereby chart an ambitious new understanding of the aesthetic experience.
