The proposed thesis examines female religious writing in the late Middle Ages from outside of theconvent, with a particular focus on the way in which two female authors, writing in French, constructed adistinctly feminized religious discourse in their pursuit of a common aim: the defence and transmission offemale spiritual authority.Marguerite Porete (1250 - 1310) was a French mystic associated with the beguine movement. Heronly known work, the Mirror of Simple Souls (c. 1300), is an allegorical commentary discussing the soul'srelationship with God through the revelation of agape (the highest form of love between man and God),and the soul's subsequent liberation from the rigid doctrine of the Church. Christine de Pizan (1364 - 1430), of Italian origin, was brought up in the court of Charles V ofFrance. Regarded by modern scholars as the first professional female writer, her oeuvre is primarilystudied for its defence of women. This study will address a selection of Christine's spiritual and didacticworks composed before and during the civil war of 1407- 1435, ending with her retirement to theDominican convent in Poissy (c. 1420) due to the English occupation of Paris. These texts, spanningeighteen years of Christine's writing, reflect the evolution of her writing style and the nature of herspiritual didacticism in response to the times and crises she lived through. The texts comprise : Les QuinzeJoyes Nostre Dame, L'Oroyson Nostre Dame and L'Oroyson Nostre Seigneur (all 1402- 1403), the Cité desDames (1404- 1405) and its sequel, the Trésor de la Cité des Dames (1405), Les Sept Psaumes Allegorisés(1409) and Les Heures de Contemplation de la Passion (1420)
