Diabetes Research Training For Minority Students

EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This institutional Research Training Program is designed to provide medical students with short-term research experience. It is being explained as a collaboration between the Howard University College of Medicine and two NCDDK funded university-based Diabetes Research Centers. Selection of trainees involves one on one discussionwith applicants and review of a written application of the program director at the Howard University College of Medicine. Selection of Research mentors will be the responsibility of the Diabetes Center Directors. These mentors will have agreed to provide the trainees with short term (8-10 weeks) research experiences and to guide them through the research enterprise. Evaluation of the program will include the following: 1) Each trainee will be required to write a paper in which the data generated will be discussed and whichmust be approved by the on-site research mentor; 2) the trainees will be required to present their data at the Howard University College of Medicine's Annual Student Research Symposium and, if selected, to participate in regional and national student research symposia, and 3) the extent to which the trainees select careers in academic medicine with a focus on diseases will be the ultimate criterion for measuring programmatic success in the long term. Fiscal administration of the program will be the responsibility of the Office of the Associate Dean for Research at the Howard University College of Medicine.
