Usage to grammar or usage and grammar? A generative approach to the development and use of formulaic language in second language acquisition.

This project compares the use of formulaic language (FL) with the development of linguistic competence in second language acquisition. Using a learner corpus, the study identifies instances of FL in learner productions and analyses the online computations involved in generating their syntactic structure. Alongside learner productions of the FL, the study compares the development of these respective syntactic computations in the same learners' interlanguage grammars. The project is the first of its kind to examine FL by adopting a mainstream generative approach and draws on implications for second language processing and the mental lexicon.
