Since the electrification of the guitar in the 1940s - 1950s, the instrument has undergone a vigorousdevelopment through a kaleidoscope of popular music genres. It has been a precursor oftechnological development in music and played a significant role in the conflict between developingsociocultural and musical perceptions of "noise" and "musical sound" (Carfoot, 2006). Subsequently, the electric guitar's use has extended into other repertoires and become integrated as an effective toolfor contemporary composition. The technologies which have evolved to form a part of this modular instrument have exponentiallyincreased its musical and creative possibilities transforming the way composers are able to utilise it inmusic today. We can now consider the electric guitar to be a "network based, instrument-object"(Lähdeoja et al., 2006). The "network" refers to the thousands of available signal processors and theinstrument's ability to cross over into virtual forms via software environments such as MAX andDAW-based plugins, while the "Instrument-object" refers to non-traditional performance techniques.Such a rapid expansion of the instrument and the emergence of varied playing styles is testament tothe electric guitar's expressive flexibility. Approaches to the instrument vary wildly over time: MortonFeldmans' 1966 work for solo guitar, The Possibility of a New Work for Electric Guitar - aims toovercome the fact of an electric guitar - while Fausto Romitelli's Trash TV Trance embraces rockguitar stereotypes and utilises an array of objects and pedals
