Building on previous EPSRC-funded work on developing novel applications of telescope windows, which are arrays of small telescopes typically formed by pairs of microlens arrays, this project aims to advance such applications further:1. Overcome or avoid problems with prototype devices uncovered by previous work. For example, previous work uncovered an field-of-view limitation of telescope windows used as magnifying or de-magnifying medical spectacles. This project aims to increase the field of view using optical engineering, and to identify situations in which the field-of-view limitations are not relevant.2. Ignoring the shortcomings of current devices, theoretically explore potential applications. For example, idealised telescope windows can be used to construct invisibility cloaks and, more generally, transformation-optics devices which might in future find applications such as medical spectacles that "flow" the view around damaged areas of the retina.3. Develop novel devices that can perform the function of current microlens devices, but better. For example, metasurfaces might be able to change light-ray direction like telescope windows, but without field-of-view limitations.
