英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Currently over 500,000 persons in the U.S. have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and can be expected to be on antiretroviral therapy at some point during the course of their disease. As the prevalence of HIV rises due to new diagnoses and declining mortality rates on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), average patients' age and length of time on therapy will continue to increase. There is thus a greater public health concern not only for the long-term management of HAART-related complications but also for the diagnosis and management of non-HIV causes of morbidity which may have a higher prevalence in older HIV-infected persons. This study will provide the opportunity to evaluate HIV-infected patients age 50 and over for prevalence of medication toxicities, comorbidities, and abnormalities in renal, hepatic, and endocrine, hematologic, and cognitive function. Additionally assessments will be made with regard to bone mineral density (BMD), responsiveness to HAART, and cardiovascular risk. Laboratory values, BMD, cognitive test scores, and prevalence of comorbidities and cardiovascular risk factos will subsequently be compare to HIV-uninfected persons from the National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES). Data files from NHANES are freely available on the internet for the public's use. The data provided by this study will not only be invaluable in increasing care providers' knowledge and awareness of important health issues in older HIV-infected individuals, but will also serve to determine the significant differences between older HIV-infected and non-infected persons in the setting of effective antiretroviral therapy.
