This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We are characterizing mice heterozygous for a null mutation in ankyrin-B. These animals are viable, but have a reduced life span. We need to evaluate a number of tissues as well possible tumors in these mice. A very efficient way to look at the whole animal and preserve three-dimensional information would be to MRI scan a fixed animal that could subsequently be evaluated by conventional histology. We will specifically evaluate the following in 3-month and 12-month-old mice (control and heterozygotes): the size of the brain, kidney, thymus, and spleen; possible dilated cardiomyopathy; possible tumors/masses. It would be impossible to obtain this level of analysis from conventional histology alone.
