This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Bayer Healthcare has completed adaptation of the duplicate of our Raman system that we constructed for them. The adaptation made it more suitable for use in their dog testing facility. Using this system, studies of Raman non-invasive glucose measurements using a clamp protocol on anesthetized dogs has been initiated. Spectroscopy Lab personnel have analyzed the data from two of these studies. Cross validated calibrations developed from this data have provided what we believe are promising results. In a seven level clamp study with the first sample removed as an outlier, the calibration has an average error (SEV) of 18 mg/dL, a Mean Absolute Error of 8.5% and an R2 of 0.96. In addition, data from the dog studies exhibited many of the same characteristics and issues that we have seen with our human testing. We expect that targeted experiments using this dog testing capability will be an important resource for us in our effort to understand the causes of these performance issues.
